Comments: My husband Donald Land was raised in No. Platte. He sold newspapers to the GI's at the train depot. One day his cousin, Eddie Yonker from Kansas spotted him from the train. He was on his way overseas. It was a sight for sore eye's. Eight years after the end of WW2 in 1953, I arrived at the R/R station after a long train ride from New York, with me was our 6 week old son. His Daddy was waiting for us, what a reunion! No. Platte should be so proud of their heritage.

Comments: I have never heard before of the North Platte Canteen, but found this web site dedicated to the Canteen to be a very informative, moving and nostalgic tribute to the people and the era. Events like this deserve never to be forgotten. I have bookmarked it and will like to drop by again. It's wonderful to see this kind of story on the World Wide Web for all the world to see. My compliments on a fine web site.

Comments: What an awesome site! I was only looking for my Dads Army insignia, (137th Infantry, E Company 2nd Battalion) which is obviously not here, and yet here I was, finding myself going completely through your site, even reading the guestbook! Not only is your site interesting & informative, it just has a really wonderful vibe to it. Quite odd, as it deals with such a bleak subject to begin with. Well done!

God Bless you for saving the memory of all those who served "behind the lines". Thank you!!!

Comments: I have just discovered the North Platte Canteen website. Thank you. And through you thanks to all of those wonderful people who gave their time and effort, but much more than time and effort, their love to all of us poor kids who passed through that time and place. They taught this scrawny New York (Manhattan) teenager what neighborliness and community was. We were, indeed, all their sons - and daughters. Between 1/15/43 and 12/21/45 on three occasions I was refreshed by their kindnesses.

I still am every time I think about North Platte.

It was truly a blessing to many people and I am happy to see a part of history still being remembered in this fashion. Thank you for your work. Steve Kasha. Atlanta, GA

Comments: While my age precludes my having served during world war II, I can identify with the stories told here. As a returning Vietnam veteran no such legitimacy was found except among our own families, but having worked with and listened to some of the stories told to me by my friend Frank Nolte, I can understand how so many recalling their brief and heartening experience in North Plate have a warm remembrance of it.

Comments: Been studying the great wars of the last century and your site came up. Well designed. Gives one a weird feeling that something like this canteen sprung into existance and then passed into history generations before I was born. Kind of makes me wonder what other bits of interesting history are out there yet to be discovered.

Comments: I had the pleasure of stopping in North Platte in November 1942 and twice in the summer of 1943. I was an enlisted man. I was overwhelmed by the kindness of the folks at the canteen. In telling people about it, I find it hard not to choke up. Just reading about it on this site, gets to me. As a somewhat overwhelmed "kid" away from home for the first time, it was sure a wonderful experience. Thank You All at the canteen.

As a US Army retiree and son of a now deceased WWII veteran, I want to THANK YOU for the service your community gave to all our Armed Forces members that passed your way during WWII. Your community can hold their head up with pride and you did "Stand Up Next to Them" when it counted. God bless you and your community for what you have given to our country and I hope the history is long remembered across this great land. Its communities like yours that make America the great place to live. I SALUTE you and all those that donated their time and effort. Shows the young people of today what caring for your fellow man is all about. If the need should ever arise again, I am sure you will be there. This place is a true American landmark. Again THANK YOU for all you did for so many.

Comments: I had the opportunity to visit your web page and found it most interesting. I intend to visit more for my research project that I have started on military trains in the USA during W W II. Its just a personal thing for me and is the result of going through old issues of National Geographic Magazines.

I would appreciate any leads that you could provide or if any material is available from your records or any publications that may be available and of course would send a check for material as needed. I am looking for text, photos, drawings, advertisements or any other type of material that may be available.

The information that I have accumulate to date is on the New York Central railroad and talks about the make up of troop trains used to move service men and women, and some information on hospital trains.

Due to war time security requirements an acronym "MAIN" followed by a number for the train was used. The acronym full term was "Military Authority Identification Number".

A few simple question come to me ;
1. Did the Union Pacific use the MAIN train identification system or was it different on the west cost?,
2. Do you have records of first hand accounts or any loges of activity?
3. Any retired railroad employees from your area that might be able to provide first hand accounts?

Thanks for any information and your time and a very interesting web site.

Happy fourth!

Comments: What a wonderful website! My husband's parents are from North Platte and my husband was born there in 1956. I recently found out that one of the dedicated canteen workers is my husband's great-grandmother, Mrs. C. H. Avery. My father-in-law's name is Dorrall Young, he was North Platte's Chief of Police in the late 50's. I would love to hear from anyone who knew Mrs. Avery or is a relative. Please keep up the good work on this website, there is so much history here.

Comments: We were heading overseas on the UP train enroute to San Diego (early 1944). In view of our state of mind, the canteen was a nice diversion showing the appreciation of the people of North Platte and surrounding areas for what unknown dangers we were heading into. I can still taste the good coffee and the excellent donuts. My thanks to all who pulled together at this difficult time in our history.

I knew about this before but when it was going on I was far away in a Japanese POW camp and not eating so good then. I think it is wonderful what the great folks in NP did. My first visit there was on a train, a refer car. I rode in on top of one in 1938 from Wyoming. I was only 17 years old. I was born in Franklin County, See LocalStores web site, but hurry, It won't be there too much longer. Thanks for the great work you did on this site. It's terrific.

Comments: I was born and raised in North Platte and have always been very proud of that fact. My Mother rolled bandages for the Red Cross and she and her sisters did a lot of knitting (socks, scarfs etc.) for the Troops.I remember my parents parking the car at the Depot and watching the Troop Trains come in, all the military personel unload - go in the Canteen - then get back on the trains. I was very young but I do remember being very moved by the sight of all the people in Uniform going to only God knew where.I am very proud to be from North Platte. And, I join those outraged souls about the demise of the Railroad Station.God Bless all the Canteen workers and supporters.
