I read the Bob Greene book about the canteen. I was telling my dad, Dr. James C Owen about it and he was one of the service men to stop there. His memory was that he remembered the sandwiches and ladies doing the work. He was also embarrassed by some of his fellow officers who were stuffing their pockets with extra sandwiches. It was neat to connect with him about being a part of this experience.

I just listened to the Author of the book recently published about the canteen. I half expected to see a reference to the publication.
I'd love to see a list of names signed in the actual guest books signed by soldiers when they visited the canteen. It would be wonderful to see if a friend or relative came through North Platte.
That is what I hoped to find when I clicked on "guest book". Heh.
It is high time we came to know about the people that sacrificed for the work at the canteen!

I'm reading Bob Greene's book, "Once Upon A Town", and wanted to see what's available on the web concerning this remarkable story of selfless giving by the people of North Platte. Would that this spirit of sacrifice was the norm rather than the exception today, especially since we are still at war. Thank you for sharing the story of the North Platte Canteen. It's touched many lives, including my own.

A Retired Vet of two wars, I was moved near tears as I read every word on this site. Though I was a lad 9 when the war started, I fought that war every day in the civilian way. Collecting the materials needed and buying stamps and bonds was an honor and a privilege and I know your people felt the same way as they served. Thank you and may God continue to bless each and every one of you who were/are a part of this unparalleled achievement.

I think that is a wonderful sight to teach students what the canteen days were like.
When my teacher assigned this to our class thought that is was going to be a boring book. Our class read "Once Upon A Town,"
this was a very interesting book to read about and I enjoyed visting this site very much because it helped me learn what the canteen was all about!!!!
Thank You to every one that helped put this site together.!.!.!.

Visited North Platte on July 31, 2005 and learned about the Canteen for the first time. what a story. It should be taught as part of the WWII curriculum in all our schools to show how great people can be.

As a young boy growing up in North Platte the canteen was part of every day life for a lot of us young kids. We could go to the canteen just to watch the service people come off those trains and run like hell to get back on. When I was 12 I had a news paper route for the Bulletin and they used to let us count out our papers and I would always count out 10 more than I needed and as soon as I got finished with the paper route I headed for the canteen and give away those 10 papers to who ever wanted them. My mom worked one day a month at the canteen and my dad was a brakeman for the U P railroad and worked those troop trains. The ones that were the hardest on him was the hospital trains with prisoner's of war from the Japanese prison camps. The canteen was one of the greatest things that ever happened to North Platte and it is to bad that it didn't get put on the National Historical list so it could of never been torn down. Bob Green did a great job in his book "ONCE UP ON A TOWN" in that book you can really learn what it took to keep the canteen open as you have to remember all the stuff it took to operate the canteen was rationed. Farmers gave food and milk, people gave up their ration stamps, it took gas and tires to get there and you couldn't buy either with out ration stamps. I believe it would be hard for people that did not live in the area to fully understand what sacrifice all those people gave up to keep that canteen open.
GOD BLESS ALL OF THEM

Hello having just got my web tv one of the things i am doing is is surfing all WWII sites i can find as my dad was a vet of that war. the reason i stopped is this among my large collection of videos is a three video set called [The best of ON THE ROAD WITH CHARLES KURALT] the episodes are titled The AMERICAN HERITAGE, SEASONS OF AMERICA, UNFORGETTABLE PEOPLE. EACH is aprox 60 min long and on one of them is the story of the North Plate Canteen so seeing your site i stopped and looked it over, a very nice job but was surprised to see no mention of the KURALT EXPOSÉ if you can run it down and offer it for sale on your site you might generate enough income to help maintain the site, the following may help in running it down a production of cbs news, a division of cbs inc, in association with bellon enterprises, ltd c 1989cbs inc. c 1993 cbs inc. cbs video is a trademark of cbs inc, used under license fox video and its logo are trademarks of twentieth century fox film corporation. fox video, inc, po box 900 Beverly hills ca #2971vhs #isbn 0-7939-2971-7 #0 8616-22971-3 7 I hope all this info helps. now could you tell me if there are records of what outfit came through when as i would like to know if the 5thAD came through there on way to California. thank you Ed HAMMOND

My son in Australia sent me a note, telling me to check this website--what memories it brought back! I have Bob Greens book and at that time wished that I could have talked to him. My Husband and I were coming home to Illinois from California--bringing our new three week old baby boy( Dr. Gary Werskey-Australia) We were traveling on the Challenger. We made the stop in North Platte and quickly got off the train--my Husband, Paul, headed for the telegraph office to wire my parents and I went on to the depot to get something to eat--a sweet lady immediately came up to me--and said "please let me take the baby and you get something to eat" Those were the days of complete trust--I handed Gary over and proceeded to go through the line.
My Husband soon found me and asked where the baby was--the depot was mobbed with GI's and we looked and looked--feeling such panic--Soon, there she was showing our "pride and Joy" to all the other wives and Mothers and Grandmothers--For all these years I have had this wonderful memory--thank you for the website--

I just finished Bob Greene's book (Once Upon A Town) about the canteen yesterday and wanted to do some follow-up research. This is a great site. What a remarkable achievement it was to manage the canteen and support our service men and women for all those years. I know North Platte has many shining moments but the story of the canteen is certainly its finest hour. It's a shame that the Depot is no longer standing. What a beautiful building it was, too. Thanks for enriching my enjoyment of this great story! Mark Hahn

After serving two years in the south Pacific, I arrived in San Francisco, California with orders to report to New York City for assignment. I arrived in San Francisco on May 22, 1944 and arrived in North Platte, Nebraska around May 23 or 24. I was the beneficiary of the wonderful hospitality of the folks at the North Platte Canteen and although I am now 85 years old, I shall never forget and I shall always be so grateful for the splendid hospitality of the lades at the North Platte Canteen. God Bless you All. Thanks

Good evening. My name is Ed McHenry and I live in Indianapolis, Indiana. I am in the process of going through all of my dad's letters he wrote home to his parents when he was away in World War II. I am scanning them onto CD's so I may share them with my family members. I am curious if my father ever went through North Platte and stopped at the canteen?
I read the book by Bob Greene about the canteen several years ago and was totally fascinated about the canteen. I have always been a history buff of the WWII era. I did talk to someone at a museum (or similar) several years ago about finding out if my father ever passed through North Platte. I was told at the time that someday the names might be put into a database that would be accessible to the public. HAVE THEY BEEN PUT INTO SUCH A DATABASE YET?
I have come to a period from March 6, 1944 until March 27, 1944 when I can tell vaguely from my fathers writings that he was transported from Fort Dix, New Jersey to the West coast by train, and from there he went overseas to the South Pacific. He then came back to the U.S. in 1945 and eventually ended up back in Indiana, late in 1945 or early in 1946.
Is there any listing of the soldiers and sailors who signed the guest registers ? If so, how do I get to read them to see if my fathers name is listed? I thank you for taking time to read this and hope to hear from you.
Most Sincerely,
Ed McHenry

I first heard about the Canteen while watching a PBS special. (I am a transplanted Nebraskan from New Mexico.) Always being intrigued with the 1940's era, I seeked out more information, finding Bob Green's book. I enjoyed reading it and imagining what a wonderful heart America, and particularly here, Nebraskan's had during the 40's. I am a gen-exer, born in '72. I wish more people my age were less "I-centered" with hopes of attaining more "stuff" and focused their energies more on helping others. These wonderful people with the help of their communities put their needs second to be dutiful patriots. God bless their memory and God bless the men and women who have served in every war on behalf of our country (including Vietnam!) I have two young sons. I hope they never have to face the horror of war, but if they do I will be a proud mother and American just as those that served in the Canteen were. Last, I'm sure there is a special place in Heaven for Rae Wilson, the genius behind the Canteen and all of the men, women and children that helped, too.

It was 60 years ago, I had been sitting up in a coach for what seemed to be days, felt lonely, hungry, thirsty......
Finding the ladies in North Platte with thoughtfulness and supplies was like an oasis ..... I have never forgotten it..... and finding this site brings back to life the uniqueness of that moment.

I am almost finished Once Upon a Town and decided to look up some facts on the pc re: this canteen in Nebraska, it is so riveting and what an honor it must have been to serve these soldiers. I wish we can do this again for our soldiers today for the ones going to Iraq. Wouldn't that be great if someone can continue this tradition.
GOD BLESS AMERICA

I have read many of the stories on this web site, many of them say how much North Platte Canteen meant to them but I know that my Grandma went and helped serve the solders and that is the BEST memory she has of her childhood. She loved being able the see the happy smiles of the soldiers when they came in the doors to eat the food that was there for them. My Grandmother's Brothers, Gene, and Gerald Arnold also helped out at the North Platte Canteen and that is all they can talk about now. They even sent use a movie about it. So in all I don't think it was only fun for the soldiers but I think i was also fun for those who served the soldiers.
Thank you for recognizing the soldiers and the helpers, because they really deserve it.
P.S. I am also doing report on the North Platte Canteen, and I was wondering if anyone could send me so info. if you can thank you so much. When you send the e-mail please title it something like North Platte Canteen so I don't mistake it for junk mail. Thank you and thank you to all the soldiers who served in WWII!!

According to family stories Mother and Daddy met because of the Canteen -- the troop train stopped there -- they met -- he stayed for a week and at the end of the week they were married and she went home with him to Pennsylvania -- I love it -- but I gotta tell you they were really strict with me when I was a teenager and dating.
