Thank You Correspondence

Thank You Correspondence

The North Platte Canteen has shown there is no time limit on gratitude. During the years the center was in operation, an average of a dozen letters a day were received by canteen and city officials from service personnel or their families who expressed thanks for the hospitality shown them.

Thank-you correspondence has kept on coming in the years since, with veterans addressing their letters to either individual former workers or simply to “the canteen ladies.” Hundreds of such letters were received in North Platte after a Jan. 25, 1977, nationwide television broadcast about the canteen by CBS newsman Charles Kuralt. Other media stories on the canteen have since followed, and each mention brings still more letters: each with its own message of what the canteen personally meant to the writer.

North Platte residents and natives have found that, in travels across the United States and abroad, they are occasionally commended or shown favors because they are from the town “with that wonderful canteen.”

One example of the thousands of letters received in North Platte since the canteen ended.
