The Union Pacific, mindful of the historic and human legacy left by four years of canteen service, announced plans upon demolition of the North Platte station to commemorate the site with a public mini-park. Dedicated July 23, 1975, the park highlights a historical marker utilizing bricks and UP heralds from the old station. An American flag that is permitted to continually fly over the site gives suitable testimony to the job accomplished by those service personnel once present.

The memorial is located at the junction of Front Street and Bailey. This picture was taken facing due north with the grain elevators in the background. What was visible from here was the “front” of the depot (i.e. the south side) while the trains arrived on the north side.
